Just as other performances, Relation in Movement represents a challenge, although unlike previous performances, this challenge is not about pain, but rather, about stamina. In Relation in Movement, Ulay and Abramovic are driving round and round a square in Paris. Ulay is driving, while through the open window Abramovic is shouting out the number of laps completed through a megaphone. The van keeps on driving. In the meantime it has become pitch black, only the light from the headlamps is still visible. When the sun comes up again, Ulay and Abramovic are still driving around in circles. A spoor of tyre marks has appeared. The artists have consistently been keeping to the same circle; perhaps this is symbolic of turning in circles around each other in a relationhip, or always moving around in the same small-minded circle of thought. In contrast to most of their other performances, the audience is not involved here. Read more...
