Aan/Uit On/Off: in fact, the only thing you see on the monitor screen is indeed a light that flicks on and off. You also hear the flick of the switch. Moreover, it appears that God, too, has spoken: 'and then there was light...' And the Big Light clicked on. We now examine this heavenly wonder of genesis with a flick of the switch...Aan/Uit/ On/Off. Pieter Baan Müller, who usually performs all aspects of a video-production himself - often, quite literally, making his own sound-effects - plays the role of a poet with what appears to be simple, everday actualities and ideas, which he imitates by means of image and sound. He does not, however, seek merely to replicate his chosen subject in a strictly realistic sense. The manner in which Pieter Baan Müller givesform either to actuality or his intellectual concepts, is invariably playful and rudimentary, leaving ample space for the observer to use his own imagination.
