In previous works of Stansfield and Hooykaas the accent was often on movement, water and wind. Nature and its relation to the medium video is a recurrent theme with the artists. In 'Outside / Inside', it is the wind and the wind direction that determine sound and image. The source of movement and direction is central to this work. It is an ancient question of origin, of the invisible motive of power. The four-channel installation dates to 1980, but was re-assembled in 2003. Some images are 'live'; they stem from a camera affixed to a wind vane on the roof of the building where the work is exhibited. The power of the wind determines what appears on the monitors, which, when the wind does not blow from the direction they point to, display satelllite weather imags with the sound of a weather report as well as images from nature, accompagnied by the wind sounds and voices allocating wind directions.
