In 1986, Ulay and Abramovic visited China for the first time. And in 1988, it was in China that they ended their cooperation with 'The Great Wall Walk', in which they walked for ninety days towards each other from either end of the Great Wall of China. 'China Ring' (1986), an 'unedited video notebook', is the last work in the 'Continental Video' series. This work, which - as the title indicates - was not edited, is a video of more than ninety minutes, recorded on this first trip around China. The constantly recurring images filmed from the train make clear that Ulay and Abramovic are travelling from one place to another. Apart from the mountainous landscape filmed through the carriage window, the subject matter of this video notebook consists mostly of 'ordinay people'. Often filmed in close-up, they look straight into the camera. These impressions as a whole exude a keen interest in the landscape, street scenes, and the culture and people of China. Abramovic is fleetingly seen when a Chinese man takes a photograph of her. Ulay, who did all the filming, never appears on camera. Read more...
