The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk - Marina (right) is a video of the performance The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk that follows the journey of Ulay. The video is part of a two channel installation. After being in a relationship for twelve years, artist duo Abramovic and Ulay decided to end their relationship and artistic collaboration in 1988 and to mark this with a performance. After almost eight years of negotiations with the Chinese authorities, the artists got the permission to carry out The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk. Starting at both ends of the Great Wall, standing 5,995 kilometers apart from each other the couple walked from opposite sides to meet in the middle, embrace each other, say farewell and go separate ways. Ulay started walking from the western nd of the Wall, at Jai Yu Guan, the south-western periphery of the Gobi Desert, walking eastward. During his walk across the wall he encounters various landscapes, from the far-stretching desert to small villages and rocky mountains. The performance became the epic endpoint of their relationship and artistic collaboration. Read more...
