We see Marina Abramovic face covered with gold leaf cuttings. Abramovic dressed in black and filmed against a black background is framed so that her head and just below her shoulders are visible. A gentle spot lights up her golden face while she gazes unflinchingly into the lens of the camera – not even blinking.  Abramovic remains this way for thirty minutes. The only movement comes from the play of light on the gold leaf.  It is not uncommon for Abramovic to place herself as the central character in her work. The still life pose that she takes on is characteristic of her later work where attrition and physical exhaustion are no longer the main themes. Surprising in this piece is Abramovic’s positioning of herself in an art historic tradition. The froze image is reminiscent of a classical portrait. The pose, color and light choices transform the work into something more painterly, perhaps even sacred.

This work has to be presented on a vertical screen.
