Landscape (1977)
Nan Hoover, 1977, 5'22''

Viewing this artwork is possible at the LIMA media library in Amsterdam

Anthropomorphic landscapes are ever repeating subjects in Nan Hoover’s work. In Landscape, slow moving hands can be seen. The lines and textures of the hand remind of clay rocks and the idea of a body part fades. The movement is combined with the sound of Nan Hoover’s breathing, magnified and slowed down, reinforcing the impression of inhospitable landscapes. This video precedes another with the same name ‘Landscape’ (1983), described in Hoover’s notes as the final version. The theme and the composition in the 1983 version is the same - a close-up of Hoover’s hand was shot in slow motion in real time, however, in this version the image is in color.
