In the late seventies, Steina began creation of a series of environments titled 'Machine Vision' and 'Allvision'. Combining mechanised cameras pointed at a mirrored sphere, her aim was to demonstrate that the viewfinder is not necessarily an integral part of the camera apparatus. In 'Progeny', one of Steina's 'Machine Vision' devices is used to explore the organic sculptural forms created by Bradford Smith. Steina uses automated camera movements to free the human eye from being the central focal device. Smith's sculptural forms are slowly panned over, distorted and transformed without further intervention. The same principle of pre-programming was later applied to Woody's digital processing. 'Progeny' was realised through funds from the National Endowment
