'Love Story' is in fact the video registration of a performance entitled 'Love Story Tour', which took place in the context of the art festival 'The City' (Arnhem, May 26th, 1983). The video was made in collaboration with the Arnhem arts centre De Gele Rijder. Using a voice-over, Ulises Carrión guides the viewer through the love story of a Dutch (married) couple named Ina and Ton. It is a true story, only the names of the main characters have been replaced. Simultaneously with Carrión's English-language voice-over, the story unfolds via a touring party whose coach takes them to the places that the lovers once visited. In the plot, the Dutch tour guide, Julie, therefore takes over Carrión's role of storyteller. And so the same love story is also being told t the passengers on the 'Love Story Tour'. For the viewer, this almost leads to an experience of what is called 'mise en abyme', as there is a story within the story. Although the lovers, Ina and Ton, remain invisible both to those viewing the video and the participants in the performance, it is still possible for them to identify with the couple - the way in which the love story is being told allows for this. In this way, the viewers/participants follow the story from the moment the couple meet for the first time to the point when Ton becomes aware that he loves Ina. Gradually, via the images made by a tourist's camera, the viewer becomes familiar with the life of the lovers - the video becomes a kind of road movie in which the perception of the surroundings is linked to that of the story.
