Within the framework of Cultural Matter, LIMA's new public programme, LIMA collaborated with the artist duo UBERMORGEN to research the documentation of complex research-based artworks, their distribution and their (re)presentation to an audience.

 

UBERMORGEN’s Chinese Gold will be the work in focus. This project revolves around a partly fictive research into the socio-economic position of the Bitcoin. Chinese Gold spans over a decade and deals with a mix of research, documentation, appropriation, storytelling and remixing. It is constantly evolving, growing and in flux. In this solo exhibition, LIMA will give the work a new (physical) presentation. During the exhibition, multiple public events will take place which will shed light on both art historical and technical importance of the work. In talks, presentations and screenings, the past and future of the work will be discussed and enriched.

 

Cultural Matter is a series of exhibitions and events that provides a platform for the international discussion of digital art and aims to develop new strategies for the preservation of these artworks. Participating artists: Nicholas O’Brien, Harm van den Dorpel, Constant Dullaart, Olia Lialina, UBERMORGEN.

The Vienna-based artist duo UBERMORGEN (lizvlx and Hans Bernhard) is an established name in the field of digital art. The work, a pastiche of software-based art, conceptual art, photography and installation, is represented in the LIMA collection. Within process-based artworks, the duo creates alternative narratives to critically reflect on digital culture. With both dark humor and activism, the duo reveals the inside and downside of a networked society.
