Dark Cinema is the first of three Non-linear screenings curated by Shama Khanna in collaboration with LIMA. Previous screenings have taken place at Close-up Film Centre in London, warehouse, Berlin and CCA in Glasgow in collaboration with LUX Scotland.

Dark Cinema
All of the works have literal darkness in them - what does this kind of seeing in the dark permit? Other references assimilate darkness: subterranean and submerged; post-human visions; chiaroscuro and carefully lit performance; mirroring and enfolded, intimate narratives. Artificial darkness is privileged over scenes filmed in daylight, which come as a shock or aberration.

Featuring works by Camilo Restrepo, Alia Syed, Charlotte Prodger, Dan Walwin, James Richards and Leslie Thornton and Ulijona Odišarija.

Non-linear
The Non-linear screening series curated by Shama Khanna imagines collaborative processes and erotic immersion in place of mounting egos, overpowering criticality and fantasy futures. These latter tropes can be read as symptoms of individualising structures of control which have come to involve media making mediums of its users.

Shama Khanna
Shama Khanna is an independent curator, writer and educator based in London. Since 2013 she has curated Flatness, a multi-format research and commissioning project engaging in ideas around the screen-based image after the internet. Khanna has presented screening and discussion events relating to Flatness at international venues including Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Chisenhale Gallery, The Showroom and Auto Italia in London, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Moderna Museet, Malmö, Western Front, Vancouver, Microscope, New York, Rupert, Vilnius, LUX Scotland, Glasgow and warehouse, Berlin.

Khanna teaches at Kingston and University of the Arts, London and co-edits the publication A-or-ist with 7 other writers. She is a Trustee of not/no.w.here cooperative.
