Vision & Mission

LI-MA plays a key role in the future-proof archiving, conservation and distribution of works from the field of media art.

LI-MA is a platform for digital art and media art in Amsterdam. With years of experience in conservation and management and as a leading pioneer in the field, LI-MA plays a key role in the future-proof archiving, conservation and distribution of works from the field of media art.

Specialist conservation is important to ensure that media and digital art remain accessible in the future despite rapid technological developments. As a knowledge centre, LI-MA is the link between artists, museums, cultural and scientific institutions and the public that engage with visual art and digital culture.

Specialist: Conservation and Management

LI-MA has its own extensive collection and archive encompassing 60 years of media art in the Netherlands. As a digital depot, LI-MA provides conservation and storage services for individuals and more than 50 collections from institutions such as the Bonnefanten Museum, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rijksakademie and De Appel. Through vigilant management, LI-MA ensures sustainable access to leading media art collections.

Advocate: Distribution and Collection

LI-MA is committed to the visibility and appreciation of both iconic works and new experiments. As the only place in the Netherlands where media art is systematically collected, LI-MA uses its extensive network to put Dutch media artists on the (inter)national map.

Frontrunner: Research and Presentations

As a centre of expertise, LI-MA is always on top of technological innovation, and what this means for artists’ practice, distribution and preservation. We exchange ideas and knowledge with partners, including Tate, ZKM and Rhizome. We also organise research projects, talks and screening programmes. Together with partners and audiences, we continue to reflect critically on the technology behind media art. LI-MA is a meeting place where knowledge and expertise converge.
